How to sign a PDF without printing it
Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read
Printing a contract, signing it with a pen, scanning it and sending it back takes time and often gives a hard-to-read result. You can sign the PDF directly on your computer or phone, adding the date and a note such as “Read and approved”.
Sign a PDF, step by step
- 1Open Docyvo’s Sign PDF tool and add your document.
- 2Create your signature: draw it with your finger or mouse, type your name in a handwriting font, or upload a photo of your signature on white paper.
- 3Place the signature on the right page and adjust its size.
- 4Add today’s date and any text if needed.
- 5Click “Sign PDF” and download the signed document.
Is it legally valid?
A signature added this way is a simple electronic signature. In the European Union (eIDAS regulation) and in the United States (ESIGN Act), electronic signatures are generally accepted for everyday documents: quotes, purchase orders, permission forms, rental agreements.
Some documents require an advanced or qualified signature issued by a certified provider with identity checks, such as certain notarial deeds. When in doubt, ask the person you are dealing with.
Get a good-looking signature
For an uploaded signature, sign with a black felt-tip pen on white paper and photograph it in daylight: the white background is removed automatically. On a phone, turn the screen sideways to have more room to draw.
Your documents stay with you
The PDF is displayed and signed in your browser; neither the document nor your signature is sent to a server. To protect the signed file before sending it, you can add a password with Protect PDF.
