Instead of applying a single setting, smart mode encodes each image at several quality levels and measures how close it is to the original (SSIM index). It keeps the lightest file that remains visually identical. JPGs are encoded with MozJPEG, PNGs optimized with zero loss by OxiPNG.

What does “no visible loss” mean?
The image is re-encoded, but the difference from the original is too small to be seen with the naked eye at full size. For PNGs, compression is strictly lossless.
