How to scan a document with your phone, without an app
Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read
Sending a certificate, a proof of address or a signed contract no longer requires a scanner. Your phone’s camera is enough, as long as the photo is straightened and cleaned up; otherwise the recipient gets a crooked, dark and heavy picture.
Here is how to get a real “scanned” PDF, sharp and light, in under a minute, without installing an app.
Take a good photo
Lay the sheet flat on a dark, plain surface: a wooden table or a dark desk makes the edges easy to detect. Light it evenly, ideally with daylight, and avoid your own shadow. Hold the phone above the sheet, parallel to it, with all four corners in the frame.
Create the PDF, step by step
- 1Open Docyvo’s Scan to PDF tool in your phone’s browser.
- 2Tap “Take a photo”: the camera opens directly.
- 3Check the crop: the sheet’s corners are detected automatically; drag them if needed.
- 4Add the next pages the same way, then reorder them if necessary.
- 5Choose the “Enhanced” or “Black & white” look and the A4 or Letter size, then tap “Create PDF”.
Which look should you choose?
“Enhanced” whitens the background and sharpens the text while keeping colors: perfect for a document with a logo or a stamp. “Black & white” gives a photocopy look and a very light file, ideal for forms and receipts. “Color” keeps the original photo, useful for a drawing or a pasted picture.
The alternatives built into your phone
On iPhone, the Notes app can also scan documents (camera button, then “Scan Documents”). On Android, Google Drive offers a “Scan” feature. These work well but often save the document to your online account. With Docyvo, everything is computed on the phone: the photo never leaves the device.
On a computer?
On a computer, open the Scan to PDF tool: a QR code appears. Scan it with your phone to open the tool there and photograph your documents.
Frequently asked questions
Is a phone scan accepted for official paperwork?
For most online procedures, yes, as long as the document is readable, complete and well framed. The black & white look is close to a regular scanner.
How do I scan several pages into one PDF?
Capture the pages one by one in the tool, reorder them if needed, then create a single multi-page PDF.
Are my photos sent over the internet?
No. Edge detection, straightening and PDF creation are done by your browser, on your phone.
