How to merge PDF files for free
Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read
An application file, an expense claim or a report with its appendices: you often need to send one PDF instead of five separate files. Merging PDFs is simple and free, and does not require Adobe Acrobat.
Merge PDFs online, step by step
- 1Open Docyvo’s Merge PDF tool.
- 2Add your files: drop them into the area or pick them on your device (up to 100 PDFs).
- 3Put them in order by dragging them, or with the arrows next to each file.
- 4Click “Merge PDFs”.
- 5Download the single resulting document.
Is quality preserved?
Yes, completely. Pages are copied as they are from one document to the other, with no re-encoding: text stays selectable, links still work and images keep their resolution. If the final file is large, run it through Compress PDF afterwards.
What about password-protected PDFs?
An encrypted PDF cannot be merged as is. If you know its password, remove the protection first with Unlock PDF, then merge. PDFs that only block printing or copying unlock without a password.
Other options
On a Mac, Preview can merge files by dragging the thumbnails of one PDF into another. Windows has no built-in tool: you need software or an online service. Be wary of sites that upload your files to their servers: with Docyvo, merging happens in your browser and your documents are never sent.
A few tips
Name your files in the desired order (01-letter, 02-resume…) before adding them: they are easier to arrange. To keep only some pages of a document, use Split PDF first, then merge the extracts.
